5. Our Lady of La Candelaria Basilica
Carrera 50 No. 50-72
57(4) 231 33 32
Medellín was still a backward provincial town when the Basilica was its main church, even becoming, for a short length of time, the city’s cathedral. The structure, declared National Monument due to its rich history and architecture, dates from 1767, though other constructions, going as far back as 1649, occupied the same space. The church follows neo-classical designs from Colonial times, and exhibits important religious art and artifacts, such as the Virgin of La Candelaria painting, which was done in traditional Spanish Colonial style. The Basilica is located in the heart of Medellín’s historical center and is framed by tradition-filled Berrío Square.
