Holy Week, or Semana Mayor, as it is also known in other countries, is approaching. It is a time of eight days that begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter Sunday.
It is also a time when the public spaces of the city are activated and where we appreciate not only the religious traditions, but all the art, gastronomy and customs that you can not miss around the churches and religious events.
Churches in Medellin that you can not miss on your visit:
Medellin Metropolitan Cathedral:
Located in the central area of Medellin, right in the Villanueva neighborhood, you can find the Cathedral on the north side of Bolivar Park. The Cathedral is the main temple of the Archdiocese of Medellín, seat of the Archbishop.
The building was designed by the French architect Charles Émile Carré (1863-1909), it has a neo-Romanesque style. The structure was made of solid brick, and approximately 1,120,000 bricks were used for its construction. For its historical value and for being one of the main architectural works of the country, it was declared a National Monument of Colombia on March 12, 1982.
Basilica Menor de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria:
Also located in the center of the city, it can be seen on the eastern side of Berrío Park. It was the first cathedral of the Archdiocese of Medellín between 1868 and 1931.
Its construction is colonial, neoclassical, with a structure of stone and lime walls. On July 31, 1998, by resolution 0795, the building was declared a National Monument of Colombia.
Church of La Veracruz:
This is another of the churches that can be found in downtown Medellin, located on the western side of the Plazuela de la Veracruz. It is one of the most representative and recognized temples of the city, as it is the entrance from Carabobo to the emblematic Parque de las Esculturas (Sculpture Park).
The Veracruz Church was declared Cultural Patrimony of the Nation on March 12, 1982. Today we can see its white front and restored by the foundation Ferrocarril de Antioquia.
San Ignacio Church:
This is another of the churches that we can find in downtown Medellin, located on the western side of the Plazuela de la Veracruz.
