Theme: Christmas Nativity Scene
After two consecutive years with a Disney theme, this year the alumbrados return to their roots and will become the largest nativity scene in Medellín. Visitors will be able to relive the story of the birth of Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph’s journey through Bethlehem, and the arrival of the Three Wise Men.
Where to See the Lights
The alumbrados can be enjoyed in various parts of the city, but as in previous years, the most spectacular displays will be along the Medellín River. The best spot to experience them is Parques del Río.
Other plazas and parks, such as Parque de la Floresta, Parque de Laureles, Parque de Belén, and Parque Lleras, will also feature light displays. Popular areas include:
- Parques del Río
- Carrera 70
- Avenida La Playa
- Junín
- The Tram route (Tranvía)
Dates
The official lighting ceremony will take place on November 29, 2024, as announced by Medellín’s mayor, Federico Gutiérrez. The lights will remain on every night until January 12, 2025.
How to Get There
- By Metro: The closest station to Parques del Río is Exposiciones. If you go at night (which is most common), it’s best to take a short taxi ride from the station, since the walking route has little pedestrian traffic and may feel unsafe.
- By Taxi: A convenient and safe option, especially at night.
- By Car: You can drive to the area and park nearby (see parking tips below).
Parking
- Plaza Mayor Parking: The best option. Safe, covered, with private security, and just a 5-minute walk from Parques del Río along a secure route.
- Street Parking: Limited legal spaces are available around Parques del Río, but they fill up quickly. Some people risk parking in no-parking zones a few blocks away, but this comes with two risks:
- Getting fined (common during the holiday season).
- Vehicle theft, since some of these areas are isolated.
Schedule
The lights are on from 6:00 p.m. to midnight every day.
💡 Tip: Go early to avoid crowds. For example, last year I arrived at Parques del Río around 5:00 p.m., had dinner at a local restaurant, and started walking the lights at 6:00 p.m.—perfect for photos and enjoying the displays without massive crowds.
Price
The alumbrados are completely free. Save your money for supporting local artisans and street vendors who set up shop during the season.
Safety
Visiting the lights is generally very safe. There’s both public and private security, and you can bring your phone or camera without concern. Still, as with any crowded event, keep your belongings secure and avoid leaving them in easily accessible places to prevent pickpocketing.
✨ Medellín’s alumbrados are more than just lights—they’re a holiday experience that brings the whole city to life
